About Us
The Flying Monk Triathlon Club was established in 2013 by a group of friends who shared a passion for triathlon and decided to share that passion with the local community in Malmesbury and the surrounding towns and villages.
Since then, the club has grown and continues to be an inclusive and supportive club that welcomes those just wanting to give triathlon a try or increase their fitness right through to seasoned triathletes and GB Age-Groupers.
The club offers a range of coached and group training activities across all three triathlon disciplines weekly, social events throughout each year and a selection of club competitions and events annually.
Membership
What We Offer
The club aims to promote the following:
- To promote inclusion and widen participation in triathlon, duathlon and other sports promoting triathlon as a competitive sport
- To encourage membership from the whole community
- To offer high quality coaching and competitive opportunities
- To promote the Club in triathlon in Wiltshire and beyond
- To ensure a duty of care is maintained for all members
- To provide these services and opportunities equitably and without prejudice
- To strive for excellence in all Club activities
So How Do We Do This?
Anybody over the age of 18 can apply to be a member of FMTC. We work to ensure accessibility and affordability to all by maintaining low annual membership costs and by working to maximise the amount of club sessions that are free of charge to participate in and minimising the cost of the sessions that do incur a charge such as the weekly swim session at The Activity Zone in Malmesbury.
To increase affordability for our members we have also secured discounted rates and fees for our members with various facilities, coaching companies and over vendors in the local area.
We aim to provide training sessions for athletes of a wide range of ability, from beginner triathletes to international standard.
We offer coached swim and run training sessions, plus group cycle rides throughout the year.
Weekly swim sessions take place at The Activity Zone in Malmesbury where we have private hire of the pool each Sunday morning, exclusive to club members only. Swim and run training sessions are led by a BFT Level 2 and Swim England Level 2 Coach. Within the summer months we also organise meet ups at Lake 32 for open water swimming.
Running sessions take place on Tuesday evenings all year round at various locations around Malmesbury and are structured sessions, open to all levels of fitness and ability.
Cycle activities include weekly evening group rides during British Summer Time on Wednesday evenings led by our cycling coordinators and indoor turbo sessions throughout the winter.
If you require specialist coaching for any discipline our members will be able to recommend coaches suitable for your needs.
We promote the club at triathlon events including the annual Club event the Cotswold Triathlon, usually held in September each year. We have branded clothing and sportswear available for members to purchase. Our annual end of season awards night is a celebration of all members achievements throughout the year and all members are encouraged to attend.
We have a Club Welfare Officer. Swim sessions are held under lifeguard supervision. FMTC is affiliated as an official club of Triathlon England; this provides public liability insurance for official Club activities and events plus access to potential development funding, coaching support and Welfare liason.
FMTC is an equitable club, and we do not discriminate against any protected characteristics.
We aim to provide members with as many opportunities for personal improvement as possible; be that through coaching, support or subsidised participation.
What We Expect

Minimum Standards
Whilst we aim to make the club as open and accessible to as many people as possible, in order to provide coaching at an appropriate level, and to ensure the needs of the many are met over the needs of the few, we have some minimum sporting standards that we expect new members to meet:
+ Swimming
Members are expected to be able to swim front crawl before joining the swim sessions and should discuss their swimming ability with our Swim Coordinator before joining a session for the first time if they have any concerns or questions.
+ Cycling
Cycling sessions vary in distance and speed, however members will require a road-legal bicycle, helmet, and appropriate safety equipment to join in.
+ Running
Club running sessions are open to all abilities and levels of fitness and we expect members to work at their own ability in sessions. Members are also expected to wear something bright and reflective on evening sessions and/or when the weather is poor and to wear lights when needed during evening runs in winter months.
